The latest cancer-fighting technology that Mayo Clinic plans to install in downtown Rochester, with a $200 million investment, has limitations.
One of the biggest limitations is not the type you might expect: There simply aren't enough "proton therapy" centers to serve patient demand.
"The main 'downside' is probably the limited number of centers," said Dr. Andrew Lee, director of the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center in Houston, Texas.
Also, patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center say health providers nationwide simply aren't aware of proton therapy. If health providers don't know about the treatment option, it's hard for patients to get the chance to use it, those treated at MD Anderson say.
