The surprise, however, is that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has beaten his old rival, Arsenal head coach Arsene Weger, to the 6ft 3in Varane’s signature, especially considering the fact that the Gunners boss is thought to be an expert when it comes to players from his homeland.
And, despite the fact that Varane has only recently put pen to paper on a contract with Lens, according to sources close to the player, a £3 million deal to bring the player to Old Trafford this summer is “nearly done”.
