Canada’s NDP surges ahead of Liberals for second place in latest poll

The slide of Canada’s Liberal Party continues just a week to the May 2 national elections. According to the latest poll by EKOS-iPolitics.ca, 28 percent of 3,000 Canadians surveyed preferred the New Democratic Party, moving the NDP to second place behind the Conservatives.

Pollster Frank Graves attributed the strong showing of the NDP to leader Jack Layton’s climbing popularity in Quebec. Layton has also been building momentum in provinces across Canada.
The poll placed the Green Party at fourth place with 7.2 percent support and Bloc Quebecois in fifth place with 6.2 percent support.
With the trend, Graves forecast that the NDP could take 100 seats in the House of Commons, although he said the numbers could still change in the final week before Canadians cast their ballots.
Based on current trends, Graves said the Tories would likely get 131 seats and the Liberals 69 seats. That would bring the Canadian Parliament back to square one with the Tories still being a minority-led government. The NDP and Liberals, when combined, could topple a Conservative government.
However, Conservative leader and incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper is confident the Tories could still become a majority government. The basis of his forecast is a belief that the party could win up to 12 seats in Greater Toronto, which is traditionally pro-opposition. The party has been shut out in Ontario’s capital city since the 1990s.
To ensure a majority victory, Harper promised Canadian voters assistance for elderly residents, approval of a package of crime bills and protection for health care.
In the last Parliament, of the 23 Toronto voting districts, two were held by the NDP – one by Layton and the other by his wife Olivia Chow, who represented the riding of Trinity-Spadina
