dossier of US files leaked by the whistleblowing website Wikileaks has suggested that esteemed broadcaster BBC might in fact be a “possible propaganda media network” for Al Qaeda.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the phone number of an individual at the corporations World Service HQ was contained within the phone contacts of extremists picked up by American forces.
In the report an analyst speculates that such individuals could have made contact with BBC employees via the number to obtain information on raids against militants.
A note read “Numerous extremist links to this BBC number indicates a possible propaganda media network connection. Network analysis might provide leads to individuals with either sympathetic ties to extremists or possibly possessing information on ACM (anti-coalition Militia) operations.”
A BBC spokesperson repudiated the analysts report however, pointing out that the service has interviewed all sides of the Afghan conflict and that it would thus “not be surprising that a number believed to relate to the BBC Pashto service was in circulation.”
